Walk Away

The shot

The plate is a slow dolly back down an empty desert highway at golden hour. A man walks toward the lens, away from a parked black muscle car, and slides on his sunglasses. In the final, the car blows apart behind him: the doors tear open, the glass bursts and a fireball rolls into the sky. He never breaks stride.

How it was made

The plate was generated as flat, ungraded footage, the way it would come off a cinema camera. The explosion was added as a video edit that keeps the camera move, the light and the actor’s performance from the plate, and the final was then graded. Drag across the frame to see the plate underneath.
